Bukayo Saka struck the decisive blow as Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years, edging past Atlético Madrid 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory.
With the tie finely balanced after a 1-1 draw in Spain, Saka delivered on the stroke of half-time, drilling home the winner that sends Mikel Arteta’s side to Budapest on May 30.
The result capped a remarkable 24 hours for Arsenal, who also regained control of the Premier League title race following Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at Everton.
Now, with only West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace left to face domestically, the Gunners are chasing a historic double, their first league crown in 22 years and a maiden Champions League triumph.
Arsenal’s run has been record-breaking: unbeaten in 14 Champions League matches this season, equalling their club-best 41 wins across all competitions, and keeping 30 clean sheets, their highest tally since 1993/94.
Saka himself has been central, directly involved in 14 goals at the Emirates in Europe, surpassing Theo Walcott and closing in on Robin van Persie’s record.
Atlético, meanwhile, failed to win either leg of a European semi-final for the first time since 1999, while Arteta becomes the second-youngest Arsenal manager to lead the club into a major European final.
The Gunners now await either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in Budapest, with history firmly within their grasp.
