Arsenal 3-1 West Ham: Gunners Go Seven Points Clear

Arsenal have gone seven points clear of second placed Newcastle United after beating West Ham United 3-1 at the Emirates stadium to cap off off a thrilling Boxing Day action.

The Gunners went into half-time behind but emerge at the final whistle victorious.

Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to win for the first time since February, with goals from Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah cancelling out Said Benrahma’s penalty.

The win ensures Arsenal have now equalled a club record seven straight Premier League home wins from start of a season, matching the achievements of the 1934/35, 2005/06 and 2017/18 seasons.

Arsenal winger Saka says the Gunners went up a gear in the second half.

“It was much better than the first, the first I think we were just getting back into our rhythm. We had a lot of possession but we weren’t effective and in the second half I think we were much better. You can see that in the three goals.”

Martinelli who scored the second goal says the fans gave them the confidence to come from a goal down to win, a rarity for the Gunners for 10 months.

“Very happy. We were having a very good first half, we conceded a penalty but you could see straight away our fans, how they supported us after their goal. It gave energy to us. So happy with the victory and the comeback. In football you can start the game losing or winning, it happens, and we need to be ready for anything.”
