Awoniyi Makes Instant Coventry Impact with Goal and Assist

Taiwo Awoniyi made a stunning impact on his first start for Coventry City, scoring and providing an assist as the Sky Blues defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The Nigeria international needed just three minutes to open his Coventry account before turning provider two minutes later, as the hosts raced into a two-goal lead.

Awoniyi received the opportunity to make his first start after coming off the bench in Coventry’s Premier League opener against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat.

The 29-year-old wasted little time making his mark against Plymouth, finding the net in the third minute before setting up Jack Rudoni for Coventry’s second goal in the fifth minute.

Plymouth responded through Oliver Irow in the 21st minute and Xavier Ameachi in the 54th minute to draw level, but Coventry regained control when substitute Ephron Mason-Clark restored their lead in the 67th minute.

Victor Torp then completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 78th minute as Coventry secured a 4-2 victory and booked their place in the third round.

Awoniyi has now been directly involved in two goals in his first two appearances for Coventry since joining the club, giving manager Frank Lampard an early indication of what he can offer in attack.

The Nigerian striker will hope his explosive display against Plymouth earns him a regular starting role as Coventry continue their Premier League campaign.
