Celtic Open Talks to Re-Sign Iheanacho

Celtic have opened discussions over a possible return for Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho after manager Martin O’Neill confirmed his desire to bring the forward back to the club.

The 29-year-old became a key figure for Celtic last season after joining on a one-year contract, helping the club secure the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup with a series of important goals.

Iheanacho is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract and has been training individually while awaiting his next move.

Speaking after Celtic’s pre-season draw against Shelbourne in Dublin, O’Neill revealed that talks are ongoing and admitted he would like the striker to return to Parkhead.

“I’d like to do something with him. If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him,” O’Neill told reporters.

The Celtic manager highlighted the importance of a full pre-season programme for Iheanacho after the striker endured an injury-disrupted campaign last term.

“That’s something he didn’t have last year. After about three minutes, he was injured against Sturm Graz and he then hurt himself in the League Cup final as well,” O’Neill added.

Despite those setbacks, Iheanacho made a strong impact when available, providing Celtic with experience and attacking quality during their domestic double-winning campaign.

“I would like to have him. It would be nice. I’m definitely pursuing that at this minute,” O’Neill said.
