EFL Cup: Iheanacho seeking to emulate Akinbiyi, Ekoku; closes in on 50th Leicester City goal
Foxes forward looking to become third Nigeria international to reach double figures in competition's history
Kelechi Iheanacho will be seeking to become the third Nigeria international to score 10 goals and more in the EFL (Carabao) Cup when he visits St James Park Tuesday for Leicester City’s quarterfinal tie against Newcastle United.
Iheanacho scored the only goal on Saturday to fire the Foxes to the fourth round of the FA Cup and the 26 year old will be hoping to score in back to back games for
the first time since he scored in three games in a row between March 3 and 14 and April 11 and 26, 2021.
If he scores, it will also be his 10th in 22 appearances in the competition and make him the third Super Eagles player after Efan Ekoku who scored 11 times in 23 games
and Ade Akinbiyi who netted 12 goals in 26 matches in the competition.
Another Nigeria-born player who scored two more than Akinbiyi in 38 games but never played for his father’s country is Dele Adebola.
The goal will also become his 50th in 189 appearances for the Foxes since August 2017 when he swicthed Manchester City for Leicester City.
Iheanacho will also be looking to not only score his second goal in eight games against Newcastle United but also to extract his and the Foxes’ pound of flesh from their host who came, saw and demolished Brendan Rodgers’ side 3-0 in a Premier League at the King Power stadium on Boxing Day last year.
