Lookman Fires Atlético Into UEFA Champions League Semis
Ademola Lookman delivered another decisive performance for Atlético Madrid, scoring in their Champions League quarter-final clash to secure a place in the semi-finals.
The Nigerian forward struck in the 31st minute, latching onto a Marcos Llorente cross and slotting past Joan García to put Atlético ahead 3-2 on aggregate, despite Barcelona leading on the night. He was later substituted in the 66th minute for Nico González in a tactical change.
Since joining from Atalanta in January, Lookman has been a revelation. He now has two goals and two assists in six Champions League games for Atlético, alongside six goals and five assists in 17 appearances across all competitions.
His overall European record stands at eight goals in 21 Champions League matches with the two for Atlético this season, six during his spell at Atalanta, and none in his single outing for RB Leipzig.
Lookman’s strike also elevated him into the history books of Nigerian football. He now sits third on Nigeria’s all-time Champions League scorers list, surpassing Victor Ikpeba (7 goals). The ranking is led by Victor Osimhen (16 goals), followed by Obafemi Martins (9 goals), with Lookman now on 8 goals.
The Nigerian international’s form has been pivotal in Atlético’s resurgence under Diego Simeone, with his clinical finishing ensuring the club’s return to the last four of Europe’s premier competition.
