Martin O’Neill: ‘I Actually Fancied Iheanacho’ After Fir Park Drama

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has praised the composure of Kelechi Iheanacho after the Nigerian striker converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday night.

With the Scottish Premiership title race hanging in the balance, Iheanacho stepped up under immense pressure to deliver the decisive goal, keeping Celtic’s hopes alive heading into the final day of the season.

Reflecting on the moment, O’Neill admitted he had confidence in the forward despite the tension surrounding the kick.

‘Penalty taking is still very, very difficult under the circumstances. But do you know what, I actually fancied him,’ O’Neill told The Herald.

‘He’s on a bit of a mission at this minute. He’s done great for us in these little cameo roles. He’s been a big, big part of proceedings in the last number of weeks.’

O’Neill revealed that both Iheanacho and Arne Engels were prepared to take responsibility, but he was pleased the Nigerian wanted the ball.

‘When it came to the point, I was pleased that he wanted to take it because it’s the most important thing,’ he said.

The victory ensures Celtic remain in contention for the title, with Saturday’s clash against Hearts now a must-win fixture. Only three points will be enough to secure the Scottish Premiership crown, setting up a thrilling finale to the season.
