Nigeria Wrestling Team Sets Sights on Glory in Egypt, Adeniyi Urges Discipline

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) contingent has departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for the 2026 African Wrestling Championships scheduled to hold in Alexandria, Egypt, from April 27 to May 2. The competition will feature U17, U20, and Senior categories.
The team comprises 10 female wrestlers and 8 male wrestlers, set to compete across 18 categories.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD, who also serves as Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, bid farewell to the athletes with a passionate charge to uphold Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage.
‘I want to appreciate all of you for the discipline and dedication you exhibited during camp. That is the spirit you must showcase in Egypt,’ Adeniyi said.
He emphasized the goal of retaining the women’s championship title, which Nigeria has won 14 times, a record unmatched in the country’s sporting history.
‘Heading into this championship, we are the current women champions, and we must try our best to bring the title home for the 15th time,’ he added.
Adeniyi reminded the wrestlers that they are ambassadors of the nation:
‘Continue to believe in yourselves, maintain discipline, and make the country proud. We implore you to ensure Nigeria’s flag is hoisted in Alexandria victoriously.’
