Ofili Vs Flannel listed as one of the rivalries to watch in 2023
Louisiana State University, LSU’s Favour Ofili has been listed for the second year running as one of the athletes to watch in the 2023 Collegiate outdoor season.
The Nigerian was in great form during her last outdoor campaign, making history as the first Nigerian to go under 22 seconds in the 200m.
In the NCAA circuit, Ofili was also one of the athletes on the watch list meet after meet and the Nigerian’s head-to-head rivalry with Arkansas’ Abby Steiner provided one of the greatest battles in the 2022 outdoor season.
This year, the Nigerian, now 20 has proved she will also be one of the first names among the top stars to watch out for in the ongoing outdoor season following her incredible, African-record shattering performance in the indoor season.
She broke her African indoor twice in the course of the indoor season. She began the year brandishing, as it were, the 22.46 record and lifetime best she achieved last year.
She ran 22.36 last month in Fayeteville, Arkansas to break the 22.46 record she set just under a year earlier at the SEC Indoor Championships in Texas.
A month later, Ofili rewrote the record when she ran 22.11 at the semifinal stage at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Nigerian has thus set the stage for another spectacular outdoor season and the NCAA website is already highlighting the head-to-head between Ofili and Florida University’s Kynnedy Flannel as one of the rivalries to watch.
”Favour Ofili raced in the biggest rivalry in collegiate track and field last year but will have a new rival in 2023 after Abby Steiner turned pro. Ofili’s biggest potential rival this year is one of the newest Florida Gators, Kynnedy Flannel.
”Ofili remains the favorite entering 2023 after breaking records last season. However, Flannel transferred to Florida after finishing third in the 200-meter final during the outdoor season and fifth during the indoor season at Texas.
‘Now a Gator, Flannel will get to compete against Ofili in more than just championship events, as both athletes are at SEC schools,’ the NCAA.com predicted.
