Okonkwo Targets Super Eagles No. 1 Role After Unity Cup Heroics

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has set his sights on becoming Nigeria’s undisputed first choice shot stopper after delivering two clean sheets on his debut at the Unity Cup.

The 24-year-old, who was born in London and developed through Arsenal’s youth ranks, featured as Nigeria’s starting goalkeeper against Zimbabwe and Jamaica, helping the Super Eagles secure the tournament title.

Reflecting on his breakthrough, Okonkwo acknowledged the importance of consistency and building trust with both teammates and fans.

‘It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to play for your country. I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now, and to finally have the opportunity is incredible,’ Okonkwo said.

‘I want to be someone they can trust in goal for every game. But that’s a process. To get there, I first have to integrate with the team, learn the way we play, connect with my defenders, the attackers, and connect with everyone really on the pitch.’

Okonkwo emphasized that earning the confidence of Nigerian supporters is central to his ambitions.

‘I know it’s a process, but I want to work towards that and build that trust with the fans as well. I’m sure it will make me play for the badge even more and fight for the country.’
