Paris 2024 Olympics: CAS dismisses Canada appeal, raises Super Falcons’ hopes of a quarterfinal ticket
The Court of Arbitration, CAS, Ad hoc Division for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has raised hopes of a possible quarterfinal qualification for the Super Falcons of Nigeria following its dismissal of the appeal filed by the Canadian Olympic Committee over the six-point deduction imposed on the Canadian women’s soccer team for the football tournament at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Canada ran foul of the FIFA regulations applicable to the Olympic football tournament concerning the prohibition on flying drones over training sites.
The Canadians were accused of spying on their opponents which is considered a serious offence by FIFA.
Following the dismissal of the appeal, it means group A may likely not produce one of the two best losers that will join the two automatic qualifiers from the three groups.
Canada with zero point and a minus six goal difference will have to win its final game against group A leaders, Colombia by at least eight goals without a reply to stand a chance while Nigeria only needs to beat Japan in their final group game by at least a two-goal margin to either qualify as second or one of the two best losers, depending on the result between Brazil and Spain in the group.
