Rivers Angels finish NWFL Super 6 campaign in third place

7-time Nigeria Women Football League Premiership Champions, Rivers Angels ended their Super 6 campaign in 3rd place following a 2-0 win over Confluence Queens on Sunday.

Adaobi Okah and Oghenebrume Ikekhua’s second half goals handed the Jewel Of Rivers a comfortable win over the Coach Ogbonna Whyte led side.

Chiamaka Okwuchukwu who had come on to replace Alice Ambassa in the 54th minute announced her presence with a brilliant drive from the far right and sent in a cross to find Okah who was at the right place to bury the ball and hand Rivers Angels the lead in 61st minute.

In the 69th minute, Tejiri Edward sent a cross to Ikekhua who cushioned it and went past the defence of Confluence Queens to double the lead.

Rivers Angels held on and ensured all attempts from Confluence Queens in the final minutes were properly defended.

In his post match reaction, head coach Edwin Okon said a 3rd place finish wasn’t what the team bargained for but it’s better than nothing.

Okon equally assured fans of the club that the team will get it right next season.

“This third place finish wasn’t what we came here for but football happened and we have to settle for what we got and focus on the next season. My team and I came here with high hopes but unfortunately we couldn’t actualise this.

“Although this season Super 6 wasn’t very competitive following the change in format to make it an abridged one having come from an abridged league but it’s all good.

“I just hope the league organizers will make this more competitive next season so we can actually have a worthy winner and not what we had this year.

“As for our fans, I want to assure them that next season will definitely be better and we will reclaim our crown. It’s time to focus on the Federation Cup final before we finally round up for the season,” he added.

Rivers Angels will play rivals, Bayelsa Queens in this year’s Federation Cup final on June 21 in Asaba.
