Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume Storm Stockholm For Diamond League Points, Cash

Freshly minted Nigerian 100m hurdles and long jump champions, Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume will be at the BAUHAUS-galan in Stockholm Thursday when the Diamond League makes its eighth of 13 stops.

While Amusan will be making her second appearance in Stockholm after she came third in 2019, Brume is visiting Swedish town for the first time to compete in the competition.

Amusan emerged Nigerian champion in the 100m hurdles after she ran a new 12.54 seconds championships record to successfully defend her title while Brume leapt a distance of 6.89m, the second longest winning mark to also successfully defend the long jump title she won for the fourth time last year.

The petite sprint hurdler will be seeking to consolidate her number one spot in the competition while Brume will be hoping for her first win in her fourth appearance in the money spinning event.
The 25 year old Amusan will also be aiming for her third Diamond League win in over 10 appearances. Her first two wins came with two landmark achievements.

She recorded her first win last year in Zurich on her way to making history as the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League title.

Then a fortnight ago, she was victorious once again in an African record-setting 12.41 seconds, shaving one hundredth of a second off the 12.42 seconds best from the previous record she set in Zurich.

Amusan currently sits top of the 100m hurdles Diamond League standing with 15 points from two appearances (second in Doha, Qatar and first in Paris, France).

Drawn in lane, the Nigerian will however need to overcome reigning Olympic champion and world leader at 12.37 seconds, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico (lane 5) and reigning World champion, Nia Ali of USA who is the third fastest in the field at 12.49 seconds and USA’s Tia Jones who is the fouth fastest (12.53) and will be running in lane three.

Others that will file out to the track at the Olympiastadion include Jamaica’s Danielle Willaims (lane 2) and Dutch woman, Nadine Visser (lane 1).

Brume on her part has competed once so far this year, placing second at the Prefontaine in Eugene Oregon. She has seven points and ranked sixth in the long jump standing.

Like Amusan, she too will need to overcome reigning World champion, Malaika Mihambo, the German who is the only long jumper who has leapt over 7m (7.09m) this year.

A win for the two Nigerians will fetch them $10,000 each and eight maximum points on offer as they seek qualification for the final Diamond League meeting in Zurich this September.
