WAFCON 2026: Beat Egypt First, Then Wait: How Super Falcons Can Qualify for the Last Eight

Nigeria’s Super Falcons head into their final Group C match against Egypt knowing that victory is essential if they are to keep alive their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

With Malawi leading the group on six points after two matches, Nigeria and Zambia are tied on three points, while Egypt have already been eliminated without a point. Although a win over Egypt would move the nine-time African champions onto six points, qualification is not automatically guaranteed.

The outcome of the other Group C fixture between Malawi and Zambia will ultimately determine whether Nigeria progress directly or whether the CAF tiebreak regulations come into play.

If Malawi avoid defeat against Zambia, either by winning or drawing, Nigeria will qualify for the quarter-finals with a victory over Egypt. In that scenario, Malawi would finish first with either nine or seven points, while Nigeria would claim second place with six points. No tiebreakers would be required.

However, the equation changes completely if Zambia defeat Malawi. A Zambian victory, coupled with a Nigerian win over Egypt, would leave Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia locked together on six points each.

Contrary to widespread belief, overall goal difference would not determine which teams progress.

According to Article 71.2 of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations regulations, the first tiebreak criteria for three or more teams level on points are the results obtained in matches involving only the tied teams.

CAF would therefore create a mini-league comprising Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia, completely excluding each team’s result against Egypt.

The regulations stipulate that the teams are first ranked by the number of points earned in matches among themselves. If they remain level, goal difference in those matches is considered, followed by goals scored in those same fixtures.

Only if the teams still cannot be separated would overall group goal difference and overall goals scored come into consideration.

Nigeria entered the final round of matches having lost 3-2 to Malawi before defeating Zambia 1-0. Zambia, meanwhile, must face Malawi in the decisive final fixture.

If Zambia beat Malawi, the margin of that victory becomes significant in determining the standings within the mini-league.

Yet, regardless of whether Zambia win by one goal or a larger margin, Nigeria remain firmly in contention because the Super Falcons already hold a crucial 1-0 head-to-head victory over Zambia.

Perhaps the biggest misconception ahead of the final round is that Nigeria need to defeat Egypt by a large scoreline. Under CAF’s regulations, that is not the case.

If three teams finish level on six points, the result against Egypt is ignored during the initial tiebreak calculations. Therefore, a 1-0 victory over Egypt carries the same value as a 5-0 or 6-0 win unless the head-to-head criteria fail to separate the tied teams.

A draw against Egypt would leave Nigeria on four points. In that case, the Super Falcons would only progress if Malawi avoid defeat against Zambia. Should Zambia beat Malawi, Nigeria would be eliminated.

A defeat to Egypt would end Nigeria’s campaign irrespective of the outcome of the other Group C fixture.

For Justin Madugu’s side, therefore, the mission is clear. The Super Falcons must first overcome Egypt before turning their attention to the Malawi Vs Zambia encounter.
