Wayne Rooney Backs VAR Call in Arsenal’s Dramatic Win Over West Ham
Wayne Rooney has come out in strong defense of the controversial VAR decision that denied West Ham a last-minute equaliser against Arsenal.
Callum Wilson thought he had secured a dramatic 94th-minute goal on Sunday night, only for referee Chris Kavanagh to rule it out after being advised by VAR official Darren England to review the incident.
Following more than four minutes of stoppage and 17 replays, the goal was chalked off, with officials judging that Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya had been fouled.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with pundits and fans across the Premier League accusing VAR of ruining the spectacle.
Yet Rooney insisted the officials got it right. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Manchester United striker said: ‘It’s a clear foul. You can clearly see the arm crosses his face and it impacts him getting to the ball. It’s the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game. You go anywhere near the goalkeeper and you give a foul.’
The ruling has major implications at both ends of the table. Arsenal now edge closer to clinching the Premier League title, while West Ham’s relegation fears deepen as they hope rivals Tottenham fail to pick up points against Leeds on Monday night.
