Wrexham Goalkeeper Okonkwo Excited for Super Eagles Debut

Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed his excitement at the prospect of making his debut for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, describing the opportunity as ‘an honour.’

World football governing body FIFA confirmed Okonkwo’s change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria on April 6, 2026, through its Change of Association platform. The approval makes the 24-year-old eligible to feature for the three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions.

Okonkwo represented England at youth level between 2015 and 2019, appearing for the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams, but never played for the senior Three Lions side, clearing the path for his switch under FIFA eligibility rules. He is expected to be named in Nigeria’s squad for this month’s Unity Cup in London.

Speaking to NFF TV, Okonkwo said: ‘It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to play for your country. I’m excited, I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now and to finally have the opportunity is incredible.’

Born in Camden, London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo began his career at Hampstead Academy before joining Arsenal’s academy in 2009.

He rose quickly through the ranks, debuting for the under-23 side at 17 and serving as a bench goalkeeper for the first team by the 2018/19 season. He signed a senior contract in July 2021 and made his first-team debut against Hibernian in a friendly.

Okonkwo left Arsenal in June 2024 at the expiration of his contract and has since established himself at Wrexham.
